Plan9 and GNU/Hurd deal with that situation by unifying their
namespaces. The mechanisms these operating systems use ensure that the
local as well as remote filesystems can be manipulated transparently.

I'm not sure for the other Unixen, but the FUSE LKM does this for Linux.
