The 12vdc POS devices are very
handy for vehicular use. But they are getting harder and harder to find
most have gone to 19vdc. BUT, you
can find a boat load of 12vdc to 5-32 vdc boost switchers on ebay and
amazon, most less than $20 for that
service. I know it is one more box to drag but it will let you put those
19vdc POS boxes to use in the mobile...
I have them in my work vehicle so I can just plug my laptops into them and
go.
Though I have not used it, (that is on my list of todo's) Ben's
recommendation of Slackware sounds like a
good solution for just such things. Remember Murphy is and equal
opportunity harasser, his momma
walked the streets before he was born... You want to keep him off at a
distance especially under that
sort of environment.

Hi Chuck,
Getting ready for Field Day. We will have multiple operating positions all
using the N3FJP Field Day Logging Program. All the laptops will be
connected via wireless LAN. The LAN needs to provide basic network stuff,
dhcp, ntp, etc. There will be no Internet connectivity, so the server will
have a USB GPS puck for time standard. I need a quick and dirty way of
grabbing files, so I was thinking of a basic web page users could browse to
and click to download files. The users will mostly be barely computer
literate Windows users, so everything has to be pretty basic. The files
involved will be relatively small.
Yes, it is a small POS type device. I already got a Crucial 120GB SSD and
bracket and it is installed. Just got the power cord today, will try to
fire it up later.
