This is very familiar problem in small scale electronic design too I do not understand it at all. Without resorting to stereotypical/anecdotal opinions based on no real data.
It makes no sense - look at FPGAs or micro-controllers - none of their applications will ever use or target Windows, yet their vendors insist on crappy Windows based software, not very suitable for productive work. Compare that to chip design or "big software" where the same software runs exclusively on Linux (formerly on Unix of some kind) forever. If you want to be productive you need to run your funny crappy design SW in Windows VM and do most of the other work on Linux. ... or the other way around do the work on linux through VNC on Windows. Because there is no other way to browser web and read emails than in Chrome on Windows! No surprise there - Human behavior appears to be mostly irrational - not sure how we got this far on this planet - probably only due to aliens like Elvis, Albert, Elton, Tesla, Edison, Carnegie, Ford, Elon .... You can tell, especially Elon would really, really like to find a way to get the hell out of this place back home ... anywhere ...
