After reading about iproute2 I understand how to use it to see interfaces
and change them if necessary. All at beginner level.

Booted the Dell 2100 with the new router connected (eth0) and powered up.
ip add show
confirmed that eth0 is UP.

Pointing firefox to 192.168.1.1 brought up the ER-X login page and the
default username/password pair worked. Now I'll change the admin username and
password and learn if restoring the saved config.boot file makes it a
working router.

The semi-bricked ER-X will be the next project. I'll have tftp and screen 
running
when I plug in the router and try loading the recovery file. Perhaps tftp-hpa
(the package name for tftp) defaults to a BLKSIZE of 64K and so loading the
recovery .img will not trip the 'file too large' error.

More details some time this weekend.
