I'm running Slackware-14.2/x86_64 (fully patched) with

The Canon CanoScan LiDE400 is connected to a USB port on the front of the
desktop case where sufficient power is available. I feel vibration on the
scanner cover so it's up and running.
When I try invoking xsane a window flashes (probably the one reporting
it's
searching for devices) and is immediately replaced by one reporting 'no
device found.'
This all worked before and I would appreciate suggestions on
diagnosing what
went wrong so I can fix it and scan some documents this morning.
If it matters, /usr/share/sane/xsane/ is empty; there is no icon or other
file there.
I had a similar problem with my relatively new HP MFP M148dw. I don't
remember what I had to do to fix it, but I got the instructions from a
web search. Perhaps someone else had the same problem with the Canon.
