I forgot to mention in my original post that sane-find-scanner returned: found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x1912 [LiDE 400]) at libusb:001:047 could not open USB device 0x1d6b/0x0002 at 001:001: Access denied (insufficient permissions) I'm not sure how to modify the perms since USB ports are dynamically assigned when the device is plugged in.
