Thanks for the insights. I thought of doing this but it only avoids
resolving the problem of changing usb devices each time the scanner is
connected. The Canon LiDE400 gets its power through the same USB port and
cable as it transmits its data. Whether that's an issue I don't know. But,
this issue was fixed a couple of months ago when Galen taught me that the
USB hub did not provide sufficient current to run the scanner and connecting
scanner and desktop directly allowed xsane to find the device.
