Ben, I ran pavucontrol and it showed a HDMI output (which I don't think I really have here), and the front panel jack.
That said, if pulseaudio isn't showing you the options you are looking for, open alsamixer and press f6.
Aha! That presented three options and I selected HD-Audio Generic which alsamixer displays, along with the Realtek ALC1220 chip, and the full range of inputs and outputs. I hadn't realized that alsamixer's default was not specific to this motherboard.
