Ben, The headset is not a USB device as far as I know. Anywho, I bought a USB external sound card that has jacks for headphone and microphone. Since it's a separate card I expect that either a) it will accommodate the headset when I plug it in or 2) I'll still need to futz with either pavucontrol and/or alsamixer. I'm rooting for choice a. I'm surprised it's this difficult to get a mixer working since apparently all (at least most) linux distros ship with pulseaudio and still support alsamixer.
