All's working now. User error strikes again. The solution is pavucontrol, but I didn't recognize how to use it each time I tried. Being used to the alsamixer display I was looking for the equivalent for pulseaudio. Testing the headset with pavucontrol, and paying closer attention to the tool's display, I see that I can turn off the sound to the speakers and turn up the headset sound. I need to learn how to properly set the microphone sound so advice on this would be helpful.
