I was going to say that the desire for a message tree seems to go along with this desire for an extreme level of control. Most of the time I can quickly and easily pick up the context of a message because the sender quotes other messages appropriately. In fact, I believe that, for the most part, common sense dictates that one's message should stand fairly well on its own without referring to a bunch of unquoted stuff. Otherwise you run the risk of having someone misunderstand you. This usually ends up eliminating the need for a tree view for me, although I can see how some people would still want it.
