You are exactly right. I chose the program I was most interested in, and pursued it outside of any pressure or expectation from my employer or anyone else. I realize not everyone can make their decision that way, e.g., a required degree for a certain position or the desire to become a PhD etc, but it worked for me. I only brought it up to further illustrate that you can get different things out of different programs and different schools.
