I wasn't aware that multiple genres could be assigned to a track. Using this capability should get me 80% of the way there and tagging my collection would be less work than writing the proposed plugin plus utilities when spare time is difficult to come by.
Nevertheless, I still think it's worth discussing the merits of the "browse by category" idea. One of the things I like about it is that by NOT storing categories in the track's tags we break away from the model of categories/genres/whatever as attributes of tracks/artists/albums. The categorization becomes a property of the user. Once slimserver is hooked into a database with the appropriate category table and there is a suitable interface for populating this table each user can organize/categorize his collection in a totally arbitrary way without ever needing to request a slimserver software change. Categorization is totally flexible. Classical listeners can organize their collections the way makes sense to them and that guy from the "High Fidelity" movie can organize his music collection "autobiographically" by album or artist. All using the same tools, no compromises, no need to worry about adding columns to database tables. In an environment with multiple users, each user can organize his prefered subset of the overall collection in a way that suits him without affecting other users, which gets me to the other thing I like about "browse by category": the tree browse mechanism. For example, in a family environment there could be top level categories for each family member. That way when dad wants to listen to something he doesn't have to sift through all the kids' music, just the stuff enjoys. Mom can organize her music of interest so that when browsing by category using the remote & squeezebox display she can avoid having too many items to scroll through per category. -- buddachile -- buddachile ------------------------------------------------------------------------ buddachile's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1461 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20755 _______________________________________________ plugins mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins
