Just an update, the CPU usage seemed to to be a glitch. I stopped and restarted the server and it settled down to a more sedate 4-5% when streaming, so your mplayer build is more than usable for the audio tasks.
I can report that mplayer under rosetta is useless for playing back full screen video though.
