You know - the thing about all this is, there is no mac installer that
puts mplayer or any codecs in /usr/local is there? This is all a
user-defined copy. I mean, I'm running "Darwin" and have my mplayer and
codecs in /usr .  So I'm not sure I understand what a uname return has
to do with this? 

Why not simply check for mplayer and give a decent error message if its
not there?
