The problem may have been fixed and so you could get an SVN snapshot of
mplayer and try as there have been bugfixes in this area. However just
like Slimserver - not all snapshots are good but most are.

Another possibility would be to hand edit the configure file and set
the CPU to a 386 with no MMX, SSE etc. or run the configure routine on
your VIA CPU server to get the minimal CPU settings.   

These instructions make a lot of difference to the video playing part
of mplayer but not as significant for RealAudio.
