Thinking about it a bit, it ought to be possible to connect the output of the spotty helper (or librespot using stdout for output) to the input of LMS, shouldn't it?
Yes, that's working indeed. I played with this long before I implemented content browsing for Spotty. There's one major issue, though: the pipeline would download the tracks as quickly as your internet connection allows, to fill up internal buffers. Which means that when you hit the "next" button in Spotify, it could take a long time before the track change arrived at your Squeezebox (dozens of seconds). Librespots has hooks to trigger a script or something on play/stop events. But those would be triggered on regular track changes, too.
It's not off the table. Just a few hours ago I played again with this idea. But it's not there yet.
