First, thanks for taking the time to come here and report your issue. I'm assuming that you left Output Device as 'Default'? It seems there is something in the settings that is causing a hang. In order to help isolate this, try the following: Uninstall/reinstall. In settings, press Ctrl-Shift-D, this will enable some debug controls at the bottom. Enable the log file, then restart, leaving all the settings blank. When you start it should open in the settings screen as before. A log file on your desktop called SlxLog.txt. Set server name, but disable the player in settings and see if it does not hang and you get to the controller interface. If so, then so far so good. Then go back into settings and enable the player, give it a name and press apply. I'm guessing it will hang. Then look at the log file and let me know what you see.
