I think your problem is unrelated. A log will hep clarify.

PlayHLS 1.x uses ffmpeg and will be unaffected by the LMS changes.  The
failure was probably due to ffmpeg not installed or working.

PlayHLS 2.x is "native" does not require ffmpeg and will send AAC or MP3
stream natively to a player.  PlayHLS 2.x is a beta.

If ffmpeg is causing problems on your NAS - then you can install the 2.x
beta use the following repository 
http://bpa-code.github.io/bpaplugins/repo-playhls-v2-beta.xml

I could force all user is PlayHLS 1.x onto 2.x but if there is a hidden
issue - I could end up with a tsunami of problems to be handled. At the
moment I do not have the time to handle such a possibility.
