What about Squeezelite > with alac built in? If the file does not play then the problem is more likely in LMS as it is LMS that "separates" image from audio and stream the audio.
It feels like the file is not streamable and when you modify the image you have made ther file streamable. Did you try the "movflags faststart" command on the offending file with png ?
