You've had a combination of problems which never makes things easy. 

I think SSL support is still involved.  SSL has many components and so
there have been reports of odd problems when things get out of kilter. 
One area that might be contributing is CA certificates - however I don't
know enough of OPenSSL on Linux yet alone Mac to offer advice on how to
check whether stored CA certs are OK..
