Maybe padding is easier to understand with a money calculation: I have $100. My son has $150. We want to know how much we have combined... I calculate $100 + $150 = $250. He's a smart-ass with a scientific calculator so he calculates $100.00000000 + $100.00000000 = $250.00000000. He types those 8 extra zeroes himself and is very proud. Guess what? Either way, we have two hundred and fifty bucks even money.
