ahah, feels like you're playing Socrates, all this sounds a bit like a
trick ;)

I'll make a lot of shortcuts : 16 bits source audio gives you ~6dB/bit =
96dB SignalToNoise - SNR (if I remember correctly your old Vinyl is
60-70). If you apply soft volume, your SNR will decrease accordingly to
the ratio you apply, i.e. maybe around ~20dB for mid-volume. You might
not lose these if you send them to a 24 bits DAC but don't forget that
now you have an analogue signal which is 10~20 times less (0.05~0.1V
instead of 1V) and then you have to make sure that that this potential
benefit is not lost in the rest of your chain (how much noise it brings
back when amplifying more to get you to a comfortable level).

So padding does not add anything, there is no extra information created.
Now if you want to transform (divide) the input, for sure we are back to
the initial comment that larger integers are needed for interim
calculation and your 24 bits DAC falls under that. When adding all the
rest will it be noticeably better... oh well, then this thread should
probably move to the audiophile one which is not for me :)
