Think about it the following way: your DAC can do 0..1V and has 10 + 1 steps, the data it receives are all between 0..10, 0 = 0V 5 = 0.5V 10 = 1V You break the bank and get a DAC with 100+1 steps, 0 = 0V 5 = 0.05V 10 = 0.1V 50 = 0.5V 100 = 1V But it still receives data 0..10, so you have to multiply each received value by 10 to have the same result as your first DAC.
