It's an iphone xr In fact, after another reboot (the first since the IOS 15 upgrade I think) it now looks much more like @ftlight's screenshot, and it works fine again. I was, however, totally stuck on that screen and couldn't get away from it (within iPeng) no matter where I clicked / swiped etc.,) I'm glad it was temporary; perhaps it was just a glitch as part of the upgrade or something.
