Thanks for your patience.  Yes I'm often wrong! :-)

/var/cache/slimserver and /var/log/slimserver are owned by slimserver. 
And I can see the slimserver entry in /etc/passwd.  I was using the
Linux users and groups tool which I would have assumed displayed all
users regardless of status. Obviously not. ( Don't you hate tools you
can't rely on? )

I've also done a ps-ef and can see that slimserver actually runs under
the userid 111.  ( Which is the slimserver account of course )

I think I understand the permissions now. 
Access for the slimserver id is implied under the general or others
access permission. I guess I was expecting it to be explicitly listed
either as owner or a group entry and with the permissions more locked
down. ( 750 rather than 755 perhaps )

Perhaps I should stop trying to confuse myself now as everything is
working.
