The symptom where thre stream seems to start and then stops a numer of second later generally indicates that mplayer, lame/flac has failed to connect and convert a stream. The reaons for Windows are different to Linux ones as socketwrapper is used in Windows and a shell script is used for Linux. So in this case it is not good to compare Windows problems to Linux problems.
Also - there are other issues with Softsqueeze regarding startup - I can see themn on my system - Softsqueeze has a delay while an Sb3 has no delay. So I would prefer not to include Softsqueeze problems as I think it is specific to Softsqueeze. chris_x, What version of mplayer are you using ? Have you tested it standalone ? The issues is to see does mplayer have an problem. If you change the mplayer option "-really-quiet" to "-quiet" in the custom-convert.conf file. Then you need to run SC from a shell prompt and not as a daemon. Enable plugin.alienBBC logging to INFO. YOu will now get logging message and mplayer message on the terminal from which ran SC.
