More info would be helpful such as

1. Is this a new problem that has started to happen or the problem has
been there since the first time AlienBBC has been used.
2. Does the problem happen on "Live" stream, "Listen Again" or both.
3. Does the problem happen on other BBC stations ?
4. Does the problem happen if you transcode to MP3 rather than FLAC ?
5. What is the CPU / memory loading of the system when the problem
happens ?
6. When the gaps occur - is the music continuous (silent gaps
interrupting music) or does the music skip (i.e. silent gaps replacing
music)

Also include
- what sort of player - Non-hardware using stream.mp3, s/w Softsqueeze,
hardware (sb1,Sb2,SB3, Transporter, Boom, Duet), 3rd party hardware
- full spec of system and versions of s/w
- how your network is setup. (e.g. Wired/wireless modem->server,
Wired/Wireless Server->playter)
- type of internet connection (e.g. speed, cable/DSL/satellite )

The possible causes of the problem include:
1. BBC / Network / ISP resulting in loss of data or very bursty data.
2. Router - with some setting the Airport Extreme has been known to
affect RTSP traffic.
3. iMac System - system overload can result in not being able to
transocde the stream fast enough.
4. Wireless network - quality of network can affect playback especially
if using Flac.

Answer to the initial questions should help eliminate possible causes.
