reading between the lines of your suggestions, and not finding the menu item for SB3 extras I decided to try hard wiring my Imac to the airport, to reduce the wireless load, and this produced a blissful full hour of music without any gaps. Many thanks. In Tune ended quite abruptly but I suspect that this was a BBC effect, I'll report later if this appears to be more systematic.
