It's not necessary to use the PowerSave plugin with SrvrPowerCtrl,
though I do.

If you have SrvrPowerCtrl's "Power-off attached players" feature
enabled, then SrvrPowerCtrl asks SqueezeCenter to turn off the players
just before it shutsdown/suspends/etc. the system. The players do
indeed get turned off. So, yes, feature helps you reach your goal.

But according to my Kill-A-Watt meter, there's only a one watt
difference between a SB3 that's "on" and one that's "off. My SB3 draws
5 watts when on (playing or idle), and 4 watts when "off." Since it
doesn't measure tenths or hundredths of watts consumed, who knows
exactly what the difference is. If you live off the grid, where every
milliwatt is precious, this 1 watt difference may be meaningful to you.
Or, if you think of it as 1 watt x 20 hours x 365 days (assuming that
you play your player 4 hours a day on average), then that's, what?
Around 7 kilowatts saved per year? I think that's about the equivalent
of skipping three showers over the course of that year. Moral of this
story? In the future, if we're collectively going to get serious about
saving energy, we're going to have to get serious about new deodorant
technology.

SrvrPowerCtr's "Power-off" feature is really there for the benefit of
IRBlaster and PowerCenter.

On my system, I have PowerCenter configured so that whenever my
Transporter gets "turned off", PowerCenter fires off an X10 command to
turn off my two big power amps. That's why I'm using PowerSave too: I
have it configured to turn off the Transporter (and thus the amps via
PowerCenter) after 20 minutes of idle time. Then I have SrvrPowerCtrl
configured to suspend the server after 45 minutes of idle. The fact
that SrvrPowerCtrl "re-turns-off" the Transporter most of the time
doesn't harm anything. The amps just stay powered off.

So, unless you are using IRBlaster or PowerCenter to power down other
equipment, or unless that 1 watt is important to you, PowerSave serves
mostly a cosmetic purpose: you get a nice clock to look at without
having to reach for your remote. Or if you have your "off" brightness
set to 0, then you'll (I think) save on the longevity of the VFD
display.
