mle,
you can read part of this admittedly huge thread, I think you'll get a
lot of responses to your questions.
However, a few quick replies :
You *must* setup your computer for correct operation of sleep and wake
before using the plugin. On VortexBox, everything is preinstalled, but
you certainly have to care for some configuration and testing:
- first the computer that is to wake up on lan must be wired to the
lan, not wireless.
- then Bios settings must be set for WOL
- third, you should test that sleep and wake works, directly on the
machine. Examine the state of affairs with USB during this step. To
wake-up orderly, you may have to dismount the drive before sleep, or
(ouch) unload the USB module. Just take a note of the required steps to
obtain a consistent sleep/wake cycle.
- Now, try waking the computer from the LAN. You could do that from
any computer, the router if it has wol, or the Duet. I suggest using a
wired device for debugging, you'll clearly see you're sending the wol
packets, and whether the box wakes-up or not. Check the Bios if it
doesn't.

Once this is done, check back here, or in the Linux thread, and ask for
help if you need. For example, you might need to write a script
wrapping-up the call to pm-utils, to do some dismount/mount mojo for
your USB drive. Or, you may encounter trouble with WOL, and need to do
some adjustment in the linux config.

Then you'll be all set. SrvPowerControl will check for idleness of your
Duet, and put the computer to sleep after a delay set according to your
tastes. When you'll grab the SBC again, it will send WOL packets to
wake-up the machine.
Normally you won't need this (the SBC magically sends WOL packets when
there is no server in sight), but if you want there is an SBC applet
available from the wiki, to explicitely send WOL packets. The applet
creates a menu you can select with the wheel, and send WOL packets. See
"Wake-on-LAN", by T. Houlberg, on

Long reply, but the whole thing might well be very easy. This depends
on your machine, it's hard to tell in advance.
