Sorry...

Yes, the audigy is an add-on card (which was added in-factory). The
Motherboard does have an on-board sound card (it has never been used and
it doesn't show up anywhere as I believe it is disabled in BIOS).

When visiting the panel you describe and clicking volume, I am sent to
the XP sound mixer which shows the 'play control' levels. These are:
Wave, MIDI Synth, CD Digital, Auxiliary, CD Audio, Line-in and
Microphone. None are muted and all but the microphone have their levels
between 30 and 100%.

If I change the mixer to show 'Recording Control', I am shown sliders
for:
MIDI synth, "What-U-Hear", S/PDIF-In, CD Digital, Analog Mix,
Microphone and Wave. Once again, all faders are between 30 and 100% and
"What-U-Hear" is selected (and at about 70%).

The odd thing is that the Wave Input plugin is definitely capturing
from my webcam as I have no other microphones connected to the computer
(the microphone socket on my Audigy soundcard is not connected to
anything).

Everything else seems to be working fine (including MIDI etc - I'm a
music teacher and composer/arranger by trade and have never encountered
any problems either with MIDI, wave files or CD). Fingers crossed that
I can get this sorted.

Thanks for your help.
