With RC5 is might get easy :) You just need the adress and command.
Commands for volume up and down are 16/17. The adress can be found in the table here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RC-5. Don't know under what category your speakers fall, maybe 'preamp' (=16) ? As they are just 31 possibilities you can easily try them out. I would start with a file that creates a menu just for volume up and all possible RC5 cods, like RC5X:01:016:-1 , RC5X:02:016:-1, RC5X:03:016:-1 and so on.
