Hello fellow squeezers, This post started as a question but in writing it and checking what I actually had installed, I solved it, and I'm now listening to BBC Radio through the iPlayer plugin on my Squeezebox. :)
I had an (almost) working Squeezeboxserver running on my OpenSuse11.2 Linux box...but there was one thing preventing me from going out and getting a Squeezebox bedside Radio... BBC iPlayer didn't seem to want to work at all, nor did AlienBBC, not even the beta version mentioned in another post about not playing WMA files... I was tearing my hair out, until I realised the problem was that my OpenSuse box had not had the necessary WMA drivers/packages installed: xmms-wma (packman repository I think, although I'm not sure this one is absolutely necessary) !!AND THE VERY IMPORTANT!! *perl-Audio-WMA* package (also packman) Both installable via YAST2 Software Manager if you have the packman repo installed.. This may seem obvious to those in the know, but it took me quite a while to realise that WMA /in perl/ isn't supported within the w32codec-all, and that SB is primarily (completely?) written in Perl...This means that your Linux box may well play .wma files ok in VLC or Amarok (for example) but will not work in Squeezebox server...so you need to install the perl-Audio-WMA codec (thingy) specifically. I wonder if it would be possible to include this in the SBS.rpm..? (perhaps add it to the pre-requisites bit of the linux install wiki page..?) Anyway, in case it prevents others from unnecesary hair loss... MY SETUP: Outside UK OpenSuse11.2 CODEC (THINGIES) INSTALLED: flashplayer (packman) mplayer (packman) ffmpeg (packman) LAME (packman) FLAC (packman) w32codec-all (packman) perl-Audio-WMA xmms-wma SB VERSION AND SETTINGS squeezeboxserver-7.4.1-1.noarch.rpm (installed by copying it to a /root/folder/ and setting that up as a repository in YAST2 Repository Manager) BBC iPlayer (0.9j) plugin enabled all three AAC, MP3 and prefer WMA streams in the settings page (installed within the plugins -> 3rd Party plugins section within SB settings web interface) SYMPTOMS OF THE PROBLEM: When I selected 'BBC iPlayer' -> 'listen live' -> 'Radio 4 FM' and clicked play, it said: BBC Radio 4 48kbps CBR, ASX Internet Radio for a few seconds, and then: BBC Radio 4 (no logo) BBC 48kbps CBR, WMA Internet Radio And goes to zero and won't play (and never displays the logo). Clicking on the play button reset it to the first message for a few seconds then it stopped, displaying the second. Interestingly, it still doesn't want to play the few stray WMA music files I have in my collection...I may come back to that, right now I'm going to have a nice cup of tea and listen to some radio, and think about how easy Linux is finally becoming to get basic things to work. Just need to fix it so it skips The Archers automatically ;) A slightly balder, but much happier, Jim -- squeezyjim ------------------------------------------------------------------------ squeezyjim's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34525 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71855 _______________________________________________ plugins mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/plugins
