Hi Pippin, This is probably a rare use case, but I thought I'd ask about it. My iTouch is jailbroken and I usually keep iPeng running in the background when I am at home. I've noticed some games and other apps make volume changes which makes my Squeezeboxes change volume if iPeng is running in the background. Also sometimes I'll want to change the app volume manually, and that changes volume on the Squeezeboxes, too.
Enabling the volume buttons is a good feature for iPeng, but not so good when it's running the background.
