Well, I give up. MiP mix information works great on 2tb of music--as long as SBS is pointed directly at the volume. Shortcuts don't work at all--UNC vs mapped drive doesn't matter and the amount of music doesn't matter.
Even with MiP working I can not reach http://127.0.0.1:10002/api/songsextended. It's not a timeout issue either because I tried this with a single album in the m3lib cache and a single album in SBS. I'm out of ideas.
