I think the controller's ir beam is quite narrow and low powered in comparison to say a Harmony which seems to work even if pointed away from the device. I got a Harmony for a bargain price from a nice Logitech gut at the Gadget Show Live at the NEC a couple of weeks ago. It's really good (but still not as nice as Suzy Perry in a black leather catsuit ;)
The SB3 should switch on automatically though when you start to play something though so it's not all bad.
