You could be right. It is 2 yrs since I did the testing and I cannot
remember details.  I did a lot of testing of various scenarios on
single and multi core system both Windows and Linux and "ffwd a track"
is an obvious scenario that I think I ought to have tested it but I
cannot be sure. 

However without redoing all the testing I cannot give a definitive
answer. I do remember getting a number of deadlock in the "run"
procedure (it was easy to make it deadlock and then located with Java
console) and spent some time on the routine.  I have an vague idea that
one of the deadlock causes might be "flush" related possibly that it
doesn't return until the flush has completed but I'm not certain. 
Trying to get around the deadlocks made me feel a rewrite was desirable
but I wasn't sure of the causes and felt a rewrite could bring more
problems.
