I was running iOS 3--haven't connected it to a computer for ages since
iTunes is a resource hog in Windows.

So it took over an hour and a half, but I installed the latest iTunes
and updated to iOS 4.2. Tested the remote with iPeng. I got the remote
to work for play/pause, ff and rew!

BUT, when I first start iPeng (meaning use another music app first, and
come back to iPeng), the remote will flash the play icon, but iPeng will
not respond. I have to press the "Play" icon on the touchscreen to start
playback, and then all the controls on the remote work as expected.

If I simply go to the home menu, the music fades, then restart iPeng
immediately, the music starts automatically, and the remote works
immediately. So basically, if iPeng is cold started, it won't respond
to the play/pause, ff or rew buttons on the remote UNTIL I use a
control on the touchscreen.

Thanx for the iOS upgrade hint--I would never have taken the trouble to
upgrade from iOS 3 since everything else worked just fine. And I
basically bought the iPod Touch to use iPeng.
