You can do this now with Audiogalaxy helper installed on the same
computer as LMS and Audiogalaxy app on your device. It's not integrated
with LMS, but the Audiogalaxy helper uses a tiny amount of resources and
doesn't require opening ports. Pinned songs (a paid feature) can be
stored on your device for offline listening. I use it all the time when
traveling. 

Or you can use a premium service like Spotify, Rhapsody, or MOG which
allow you to save songs on your device for offline listening. 

There are really a lot of options now if you don't want to use iTunes
to get music on your iThings. I find with wifi syncing and a few smart
playlists it's no where near the hassle it used to be, though. Syncing
calendars and tasks with Outlook... now that's a different story!
