The reason I advise to archive is mainly for speed in the case of
needing to rescan. For morbeas' collection that's not yet an issue, but
I can assure you it makes a huge difference on mine (67K tracks). I
think that he'll be set with a rebuild of his DB, provided that in the
future he's careful in adding music.
My workflow is rather elaborate, but it works for me:

1a. Buying physical, digital or bootleg torrents for my "live music"
needs
1b. Ripping to FLAC in Mediamonkey
2. MusicBrainz tagging in Mediamonkey
3. ReplayGain scanning & tagging in Foobar2000
4. DynamicRange scanning in Foobar 2000
These steps are all performed outside of the library folder.
5. Moving to library folder with Mediamonkey
6. Shutdown of all music services
7. Add music to MusicIP Mixer, analyse & archive analysis
8. Restart MusicIP headless and reload cache
9. Restart LMS and scan for new and changed
