The Computer Sleep period set in Energy Saver only applies after an
interactive user has stopped using keyboard or mouse. I think this is
probably the way OSX has always been meant to work. Now in Mountain Lion
it does this reliably and consistently.

If there is a WOL, since there has been no interactive use longer than
the sleep period, the system will soon go back to sleep unless a program
prevents sleep by setting the appropriate power assertion.

Sorry if this was not clear from earlier posts.

There is a new command in ML called caffeinate that is intended to allow
an interactive user to override the normal sleep period, for a specified
time, to run a specified command, or as long as caffeinate runs. This is
the program I suggested the use of by ReallyPreventStandby.

There is also the command "pmset noidle" that has been in OSX since 10.5
Leopard. This is the command that the trial version of PreventStandby is
using.

The Bug is the one I asked people to vote for on this thread - 8141.
