2 things: 1. Some networks have a guest mode that only give you access to the internet. When you somehow connect to that, you won't see any server on the local network. 2. Some WiFi chipsets seem to have compatibility issues causing connection losses. I've especially seen that with old routers but I'm having it with a brand new one, too. However, it usually causes intermittent issues, no complete loss of connection.
