No I did not. I read the warnings in
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/User/WhatIsWrongWithSystemWide/
and didn't want to go down that road unless it was absolutely necessary.
I have a completely standard 64-bit Precise Pangolin ubuntu
installation, so changing something like that seems a bit excessive (or
dangerous as that link suggests).

I'll try that then, uninstall PA, install ALSA instead, and try again.
