Hi Stefan, The server need to give information to the proxy through cache control or the pragma header for the proxy to make an informed decision. Provide such information will likely create some overhead for the server if it is talking direct to a browser. If the RFC say that a proxy "MUST" tell the server it is present in the transaction, then when Via is not present in the request, the server can legally provide no cache control directive for a shared cache, such as polipo.
