How about add the anonyProxyName configure parameter, generate some random string instead of using the proxyName when it is set to true. The server is only interested in the Via header. It is legal for client to be served by a cluster of proxies. The random proxy name will defeat the discovering of proxy loop, but that is the same as no Via is present. As for whether the server is badly written, if google does it, then it is a problem too wide spread to be fixed. It happens to yahoo too. but I have less yahoo users so it is less a problem than google. People freak out when they know others might see his personal page.
