Yes, I was very annoyed with cups anything being installed since I don't
even have a printer right now.

CUPS is fairly complicated, you can't just assume that nothing has
changed. Networked anything means read the man pages. Every time.

I try not to install anything I don't need unless it's something I want
to learn about as time permits.

Printing is frequently complicated. If you don't know what is going on
behind the scenes, then ask whoever is in charge.

Plus, the ports you mentioned almost certainly have MAINTAINERS.
Email them.

Email upstream too if you see a real problem you can identify/solve.
