Hello Deborah,
it's good of you to be so patient with doing tests
to track this problem down :)

In pproconf's main config dialog, Setup tab,
"Advanced setup..." button, Notes tab,
it's at the bottom of the column of checkboxes
down the left side "No date/time in note file name".
Please try checking it.

Just in case you didn't realise this, I'll explain why
people have been asking about the first line of the note,
and also asked you to check that option about No date/time
in the filename:

A note's filename starts with the first line of the note
plus optionally the date as _20050225 (for 25 Feb 2005)
plus some numbers like _193710_8 which probably only Bruce
understands, then .PProNote. That can become very long.

When a note is opened, it is temporarily moved from its
home subfolder: \PowerPro\Notes\CategoryName
into \PowerPro\Notes\Open.
When you close the note, it is moved back into its home folder.

Windows has a limit on the total length of a file's path;
also some characters are illegal inside a file or folder name.

If your problem arises when you close the note, maybe that's
because your category name (which is its subfolder name)
is longer than "Open", and the total length of the filepath
becomes too long when it is moved back home.
Or maybe it just contains some problem characters.

To check that theory:
(a) check "No date/time in note file name".
(b) choose a very short category name
which only uses alphanumerics (a-z 0-9)
and no single or double quote or other
punctuation characters.
(c) have a very short first line in the note
which only uses alphanumeric characters.

It may not be necessary to have ALL of those restrictions
but that is a safe place to start from. If you do all of
those things and the fault still happens, even when you close
a note with all of those things limited in that way, they can
rule out the theory that the error is caused by a too long
path+filename or difficult chars in the path+filename.

I hope that helps

Alan
