dot is not working as I expected, but ^ and $ are improved provided
the multiline option is specified (?m)

> win.debug(regex.mg(esc("0r0n",0)++"test",?".+",?"\0|"))
>

Using the previously posted utf8 version the result is
"\r|test|"

neither is pretty. If crlf were the default, we could continue to use
[^\r\n] instead of dot, but would have the option to use ^ and $
patterns with multiline input instead of lookahead and lookbehind
assertions. Just noticed the old doc for the regex plugin says

"Using lookbehinds (a PCRE-specific feature) with the global services
might lead to unexpected results." :(
