Throwing two lines into /etc/X11/xorg.conf seems to help out with
power consumption:

Option "UseEvents" "1"
Option "Coolbits" "1"

It may be worth a try.  The latter is usually used to over/underclock
the GPU.  That may actually help with some savings there.

Switching to a virtual console stops the interrupts temporarily, but only so
long as I'm in a virtual console. The interrupts resume when I'm back in X.

Changing from the nvidia drivers to VESA also gets rid of the interrupts,
but then I lose 2D hardware acceleration. I hope nvidia is working on this.
